An engineering student has tweeted to the Prime Minister seeking help in release of sugarcane arrears from a factory in Belagavi district.
Akash Mahabaleshwar Langoti of Gajapati village has tweeted saying if his family does not get money on time, they would resort to mass suicide.
He has said that his father, Mahabaleshwar, had supplied 28 tonnes of sugarcane to Malaprabha Cooperative Sugar Factory at Mukat Khan Hubli village in Belagavi district. He said, “I have no money to pay my college fees now.”
The mechanical engineering student of Jain College of Engineering sent a series of tweets to the Prime Minister from Monday.
Mr. Akash told The Hindu on Wednesday he had not got any reply from the Prime Minister or his office so far.
S.S. Ballari, Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies, said all factories that had failed to release arrears had been issued notices. “We are also taking steps to confiscate unsold stocks of sugar from the factories that have delayed payments. The government will facilitate payment either from the management or by selling the seized sugar. Farmers should cooperate with the State government,” the officer said.
Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha leaders have rushed to help the aggrieved youth. Ashok Yamakanamaradi, who met the student at his home, told him they would take up his cause. “We have told him to purge thoughts of suicide from his mind,” the farmers’ leader said.
