The Health and Family Welfare Department launched the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), the flagship health insurance programme, in Kalaburagi on Sunday.

MP Umesh Jadhav and MLA Dattatraya Patil Revoor jointly kicked off the fortnight-long awareness campaign programme at Deputy Commissioner’s office. Mr. Jadhav said that more than 1.5 lakh families were identified as beneficiaries for the scheme in the district.

He said that the officials of the Health and Family Welfare Department and ASHA workers have chalked out a fortnight-long awareness campaign in rural as well as urban areas across the district from September 15 to September 30 to educate the public about the government’s ambitious healthcare scheme.

The officials, ASHA workers, anganwadi workers and volunteers would reach out to the households and patients in the district government hospitals, taluk hospitals, primary and Community Health Centres to explain the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

Mr. Revoor said that both BPL and APL cardholders can make use of the health scheme.

The Ayushman Bharat scheme is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious initiative to evaluate the cost of health services.

The Centrally-sponsored scheme will provide a free annual cover of up to ₹ 5 lakh a family, of which the State government will bear 40 % of the premium.

Deputy Commissioner B. Sharat, Kalaburagi Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer P. Raja and District Health Officer Madhavrao K. Patil were present.
