Contemporary of Mysore Vasudevacharya to perform in city

Residents of Mysuru can look forward to a confluence of art and heritage when a contemporary of renowned musician and composer the late Mysore Vasudevacharya, will take part in a rare concert in the city on Friday (September 20).

The classical music programme is being organised to mark the visit of Vid. T.K. Murthy, a mrudanga artiste, to the heritage house of Mysore Vasudevacharya. Vid. Murthy, 96, held centrestage in the Carnatic music circles for over six decades and is perhaps the only surviving artiste to play ‘pakkavadya’ in Mysore Vasudevacharya concerts in the 1950s, according to Yadupathi Putti, an art patron.

Vid. Murthy is visiting the house of Mysore Vasudevacharya to pay tributes to the vocalist and vaaggeyakara (composer) of yesteryears, said Mr. Putti. He pointed out that Mysore Vasudevacharya’s house was in a shambles for almost a decade and was recently restored by a group of music enthusiasts in the city.

The house has since attracted artistes from different places and is growing in to a centre of cultural activities. It was gifted to Sri Vasudevacharya in early 1930s by the people of Mysuru as a mark of love and recognition of his accomplishments and is situated on New Sayyaji Rao Road, near Basaveshvara Circle.

The programme featuring two concerts will commence at 10.30 a.m. The first concert will be by Vid. T.K. Jayaraman and his disciples on vocals with Vid. H.K. Narasimha Murthy on violin and Vid. T.K. Murthy, Vid. Narasimhan and others on mrudanga and Vid. Satya Murthy on morchang. The second concert will be from 11.45 to 1 p.m and will feature Vid. Anjani Srinivasan on veena and Vid. Ashvini Srinivasan on mrudangam.

The programme is open to all music lovers.
