A farmer committed suicide at his residence in Singamaranahalli about 30 km from Hunsur in Mysuru district on Tuesday.
The suicide comes at a time when farmer suicides in Karnataka are being attributed to failed crops, mounting debts and depleting income.
Krishna (32) had run into a debt having availed loan by a local cooperative bank as also from private lenders which he was unable to repay. Though sources said the loan amount ran into lakhs of rupees, the authorities are yet to ascertain the actual quantum.
Krishna had 30 acres of land and cultivated a variety of crops but mainly sesame but the yield was not good as the area, which borders H.D.Kote, has scanty rainfall and agriculture is carried out under rain-fed conditions. Besides, the borewell in the field had failed due to depleting water table.
Under duress to repay the loan in the face of depleting yield and reducing income, Krishna is suspected to have committed suicide by hanging. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. Bilikere police have registered a case and are investigating.
