Activists associated with various organisations, including Dalit and minority groups, staged a protest at Ambedkar Circle here on Saturday condemning the attack on Uchangi Prasad, a writer from Davangere district.

‘Failure of government’

They raised slogans against Hindutva outfits holding them responsible for the physical assault on the writer. They also criticised the State government for its “failure” to curb the activities of “right-wing extremists.”

“Hindutva forces are undoubtedly behind the attack on the writer who was critical about Hindu fundamentalism and had expressed his views in his writings. It is just a continuation of right-wing extremism which has unleashed terror on outspoken writers, scholars and intellectuals across the country,” Virupakshi, a Dalit leader, said.

The activists demanded that Union and State governments ban right-wing organisations in view of their anti-constitutional activities. “Our Constitution stands on the ideals of equality, fraternity and democracy. Freedom of speech and freedom of following any faith are constitutionally guaranteed rights to every citizen. However, these right-wing forces are undermining the Constitution and hence their anti-constitutional activities should be banned,” J.B. Raju, another Dalit leader, said.
