Two held on charge of illegally ferrying cattle

The police arrested two persons on the charge of illegally ferrying five cows and 16 calves here on August 3.

According to the Udupi Town Police, the van was moving from Barkur to Mangaluru. As the driver started driving faster on seeing the police at Ambalpady Junction, the latter chased the vehicle. The driver then suddenly stopped the van and he along with three others alighted from the vehicle and took to heels.

The police personnel chased them and managed to catch two of them. Their names have been given as Sadik (31), a resident of Kulai, Mangaluru, and Iqbal (28), resident of Kulloor, Mangaluru. Two others who are absconding are: Asif and Shameer. The cows and calves were being transported without permit. Along with the cattle, the police also seized the van and two mobile phones. The accused were produced before the court here, which remanded them in judicial custody till August 12. The cattle had been temporarily shifted to the Cow Protection Shelter at Neelavara village, the police said.
