The grim situation at Neelakantarayanagaddi Island, downstream of Narayanpur reservoir in Surpur taluk of Yadgir district, continued after experts decided not to introduce boat services to rescue those marooned here, owing to the presence of rocks in the less flowing river that endangered the operation.

Three pregnant women and several residents were stranded on the island when the Krishna was flooded.

According to sources, there had been a considerable decrease in the water flowing in as several people had been able to walk to reach mainland to purchase essential commodities at a weekly market in Kakkera town.

However, many residents on the island are still facing shortage of food grains and medicine, sources added.

Meanwhile, experts suggested that the administration make alternate arrangements to help the people.

When contacted, Arun Kumar Kulkarni, tahsildar of Surpur told The Hindu on the phone, that revenue officials were present at the mainland to assess the situation. He asked them to visit the island to find out all the possibilities by which the pregnant women could be brought to the mainland for medical treatment.

Mr. Kulkarni, on his way back to Surpur from the district headquarters after attending emergency official work, said that he would also visit the island at night, once he reached the mainland and take further steps after analysing the situation and discussing with the people.

There was some respite in the water flowing in after authorities suspended the release of heavy amounts of water from Narayanpur reservoir. Officials of KBJNL released water at the rate of just 6,000 cusecs into the river on Wednesday morning when water at the rate of 15,000 cusecs was inflow.
