HIMS lecturer in trouble over forwarded message

January 17, 2017 10:28 pm | Updated 10:28 pm IST - Hassan:

An assistant professor at Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences in Hassan is embroiled in a controversy after he allegedly forwarded an objectionable video clip to a WhatsApp group of the Teachers’ Association of the institute.

M.R. Suresh, Assistant Professor of Dermatology, allegedly forwarded the clip to the HIMS Teachers’ Association WhatsApp group on January 11. Many professors, including HIMS director B.C. Ravi Kumar are members of the group. Following this, Dr. Ravi Kumar, served a notice to Mr. Suresh.

Dr. Ravi Kumar told presspersons, here on Tuesday, that he issued a notice to Dr. Suresh after a woman faculty member had brought the matter to his attention. “The WhatsApp group is meant for sharing academic matters. Dr. Suresh sent an objectionable clip in the group that has embarrassed many. I have sought an explanation from him. Based on his reply, I will take further action. Once I receive his explanation, I will decide on writing to the Department of Medical Education about the issue,” he said.

Dr. Suresh said it was an act of an eight-year-old boy who had accompanied a patient to his clinic. “While I was treating a woman, her eight-year-old son took my mobile phone and forwarded it to the group by mistake. My phone was misused. I am not responsible for this act. However, I immediately expressed my regrets on the group for the act that was not committed by me,” he told The Hindu.
