HC fiat on solid waste disposal

March 20, 2010 01:21 pm | Updated 01:21 pm IST - BANGALORE:

The Karnataka High Court on Friday permitted the State Government and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to make alternative arrangements for disposal of solid waste in Bangalore city.

A Division Bench, comprising Justice V. Gopala Gowda and Justice B.V. Pinto, passed the order on a public interest litigation (PIL) petition by former Mayor P.R. Ramesh.

The petitioner had challenged the decision of the BBMP to call for global tenders for solid waste management. He said it's an elected council that should take the decision and not an Administrator.

The Bench asked the BBMP not to call for tenders. It, however, permitted the civic body to make alternative arrangements for disposal of solid waste.
