Election Commission justifies issue of notices to Bellary Ministers

August 03, 2010 12:00 am | Updated 09:52 am IST - BANGALORE:

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday justified the notices it had issued to three Ministers from Karnataka calling for their explanation on holding offices of profit even as they are involved in mining activities. The ECI said it had issued notices to Tourism Minister G. Janardhan Reddy, Revenue Minister Karunakara Reddy and Health Minister Sriramulu after it received a complaint.

It said the complaint was forwarded to it by Governor of Karnataka H.R. Bhardwaj. The Governor, it said, had only forwarded complaints by Bellary MLC and Congress leader K.C. Kondiah against the three Ministers.

The ECI made this submission when the court was hearing petitions by the Ministers challenging the issue of notices to them.
