The National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi, has granted Tier-1 accreditation to the four Undergraduate Programmes offered by the National Institute of Engineering (NIE), Mysuru, for 3 years.

A release said the programmes are Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics & Communication and Industrial & Production Engineering.

More recognition

With this accreditation, NIE is eligible for the recognition of the programmes by other signatories (including Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, US and UK) of the Washington Accord, the release added.

G.L. Shekar, principal, NIE, said the Washington Accord, originally signed among six countries in 1989, is an international agreement among bodies responsible for accrediting undergraduate engineering degree programmes. It recognises the substantial equivalence of programmes accredited by those bodies.

Washington Accord

At present, 18 countries, including India, are signatories to Washington Accord, which encourages and facilitates the mobility of engineering graduates at international level, he added.

The Tier-1 accreditation system is for engineering programmes of autonomous institutions and universities including IITs, NITs and Central/State/Pvt. Universities. The system is very rigorous and is based on Outcome Based Education (OBE) with emphasis on parameters such as teaching methodology, academic infrastructure, publications, teachers’ competence and alumni network, Prof. Shekar said.
