A record number of 878 class 8 students from Mysuru South Educational Block appeared for the NMMS examination last year. Of the total number, 135 got selected for National Means-Cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) which is given for selected students from class 9 till they complete II PU. Those who clear the exam are given a scholarship of Rs. 500 a month. The examination is conducted to support economically weaker students. Besides giving away scholarships, the NMMS aims at developing competitive spirit among students, according to Block Education Officer (Mysuru South) B.N. Shivarame Gowda. The examination was conducted in the third week of November last year and the results were announced a week ago. The examination was open to the students from the government, aided and unaided schools.
Mr. Gowda told The Hindu that 878 students appearing for NMMS examination from one educational block out of 204 blocks in the State is a record of sorts.
He said the NCERT conducts the NMMS examination every year and one lakh students are given scholarships.
Mr. Gowda is on the Advisory Committee on NMMS headed by the DSERT Director. The panel also has on board faculty from the IIM-B and three educational experts, he added.
