The 10-year-old boy who tried to commit suicide by setting himself ablaze at his school here on November 28 died at a private hospital in Solapur on Sunday.
He was cremated at Deginal village of Indi taluk later on Sunday, according to sources.
The class 4 student of Sri Neelakanteshwara Vidya Mandir, in a statement to the police, had said that he set himself ablaze because his teacher punished him often for not doing his homework and that he could not bear it any longer.
The boy, who was rushed to the government hospital with third degree burns, was later shifted to Solapur for treatment.
Curiously, the boy reportedly retracted the statement he gave the police. The police said that in the new statement, the boy did not hold the teacher responsible.
He reportedly said that though he was not interested in going to school, his parents were forcing him to go and therefore, he decided to commit suicide. The parents have not filed a complaint against the teacher or the school management. The school management has borne the boy’s medical expenses. District in-charge Minister S. K. Bellubbi, who attended the funeral, offered Rs. 10,000 to the family and assured them that they would get Rs. 1 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Fund.
He also assured them of a house under the Ashraya scheme.
