: Stephen Tankel, Assistant Professor at American University’s School of International Service, Washington D.C., said on Friday that the U.S. would have to right-size its relationship with Pakistan. He was delivering a lecture on ‘U.S.-Pakistan relations in emerging geopolitical environment’ organised by the Department of Geopolitics and International Relations, Manipal University, here.

Prof. Tankel said it was simply not feasible for the U.S. to politically and financially to support Pakistan the way it had done in the past. From Pakistan’s perspective, a right-sized relationship would mean that it would not abandon Pakistan, it will remain engaged. From the U.S. perspective, it will put the relationship on the right level.

As the U.S. draws down in Afghanistan and as al-Qaeda had been degraded, the focus on regional groups such as Haqanni network, will become pronounced, he said.
