‘Traditional yoga is about mind and meditation’

Contrary to the trend of new-age yoga practices that tweak the ancient form, Vasant Jajoo, a techie-turned-yoga instructor, sticks to the traditional form.

In an interview with The Hindu , Mr. Jajoo discusses newer forms of yoga, the advantages of traditional yoga, and the benefits of the declaration of an International Yoga Day.

Excerpts:

Q: Do you see the new forms of yoga as a dilution of the traditional form?

A: Yes, it is a dilution that offers quick, temporary solutions. It is more like physical exercise, resembling aerobics and gymnasium practices. Yoga is not intended to tackle obesity or work at a calorie-level to handle weight loss. Traditional yoga is about the mind, about meditation and works at a sub-conscious level. It is more therapeutic, about mental release and about tackling mental blocks that have resulted in over-eating and bad habits.

Will the international attention on yoga see greater interest in the traditional yoga form?

There will be a greater interest in taking to yoga to counter lifestyle diseases and problems, but many will veer to styles which cater more to western mindset, which is seen in urban and metropolitan areas of the country. Though a few may graduate to traditional yoga, I feel many will become disillusioned by the technique and may leave yoga altogether.
