The Congress party is preparing for the 2018 assembly elections by organising village-level meetings, S.M. Anand, KPCC general secretary and the former MLC said on Friday.
At a press conference, Mr. Anand said that as per instructions from AICC president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi, the State unit of the party has decided to hold gram swaraj conventions across the State. The series of conventions will begin on October 2, the day when the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and the former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri are observed.
The first convention will be held at Vidhurashwatha village in Chickballapur district. “From then on, we will hold aseries of programmes across the State till January 30, 2017. “Ministers, legislators and office-bearers of the party will take part in the programmes. We have also planned special events on the occasion of the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s birth anniversary on November 19,” he said.
Cauvery issue
Responding to a question on the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Cauvery issue, Mr. Anand said Tamil Nadu should give up its adamant attitude. “When we don’t have enough to meet our drinking water requirements, how can we release water for agricultural purposes? A committee should be constituted to study the ground situation in both the States,” he opined.
