Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed that his government had achieved the target of electrifying all the villages in the country, former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Tuesday accused the Modi government of taking credit for work done by previous governments.

In a series of tweets, Mr. Chidambaram argued that 94% of the rural electrification work was completed by October 2013, “long before the Modi government came to power.”

“The Mother bakes a cake. A guest puts icing on the cake. Guest claims that she baked a lovely cake,” Mr. Chidambaram said.

5.79 lakh villages

The former Union Minister said since Prime Minister Modi keeps saying “nothing was done before he came to power,” the Centre should explain who electrified 5.79 lakh villages when they took charge.

Mr. Chidambaram also attacked the Modi government over high taxes on petrol and diesel and claimed government was giving priority to its revenue over people’s interests.
