Jaitley advises Punjab, Haryana to sort out water issues

March 21, 2016 12:42 am | Updated September 06, 2016 01:48 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday advised Punjab and Haryana to sort out the Sutlej-Yamuna Canal (SYL) and water issues among themselves.

Mr. Jaitley was talking to reporters on the second day of the BJP national executive meet here.

“Punjab and Haryana should sort out the Sutlej-Yamuna Canal and water issues amongst themselves or depend on the constitutional mechanism to resolve the issue,” said Mr. Jaitley.

Notably, it was after the Haryana government earlier this month filed a petition in the Supreme Court for an early hearing on the Presidential reference in the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal matter— which is at the centre of a water-sharing dispute between Punjab and Haryana — that has set the ball rolling over, escalating the tension among the two neighbours.
