BJP president Amit Shah launched a sharp attack on Congress chief Rahul Gandhi terming him weak on facts and the Congress’s legacy as being that of an “anti-Dalit party,” after the latter took part in a protest by SC/ST groups and characterised the Modi government as having an “anti-Dalit mindset.”
In a series of tweets, Mr. Shah said the government had not just brought in and passed a Bill strengthening the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, after a Supreme Court judgment had introduced tweaks, but also got the OBC Bill cleared in this session of Parliament. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s legacy is of the strongest amendments to the SC/ST, OBC commission, panchteerth [marking important places in constitution framer B.R. Ambedkar’s life], while the Congress’ legacy is to insult Dalit leaders and Dalit pride, oppose the Mandal commission and block the OBC commission,” he said.
‘Give time to facts’
“Rahulji, when you are free from winking and disrupting Parliament, give some time to facts as well. NDA Government, through a Cabinet decision and in Parliament ensured the strongest amendment to the [SC/ST] Act. Why are you protesting that?” he said. “It would have been good if Congress President would have spoken about his party’s treatment towards Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Babu Jagjivan Ram and Sitaram Kesari. Congress way of treating Dalits is patronising and condescending,” he added.
