A delegation of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS) on Thursday met Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal regarding the 10% customs duty imposed on newsprint in the Union Budget, an official said.

The delegation was led by Society president Jayant Mammen Mathew, executive editor of the Malayala Manorama Group.

Mahendra Mohan Gupta of Dainik Jagran and Mohit Jain of Bennett Coleman Ltd. were also present.

Earlier, the INS had sought a rollback of the 10% duty saying the move would put unbearable burden on the industry.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said the 10% duty was to provide a level playing field to domestic manufacturers.
