In view of the worsening security situation in Libya, India on Thursday asked its nationals to exercise extreme caution and stay in contact with others in the community. The Ministry of External Affairs, in an advisory, has asked Indians to return.

“In view of the security situation in Libya, Indian citizens are advised to observe extreme caution, avoid places of fighting and be in touch with each other on WhatsApp groups already set up,” said the MEA.

Citizens were also urged to contact Indian Embassy helpline on 00218924201771 and 912146640 belonging to Mustafa Salim of the mission. Indians employed in Libya were urged to take advantage of flights still operating from capital Tripoli’s international airport.

Hostilities have broken out in the first week of this month after General Haftar-led Libyan National Army launched a military campaign to take control of capital Tripoli from the UN-recognised GNA — Government of National Accord.

A significant number of Indians are working in hospitals and in the commercial sector of Tripoli. In 2011, during the war to overthrow Col. Muamar Gaddafi, a large number of Indians were at risk. But many stayed back.
