Gold worth Rs. 7.22 crore seized at Kolkata airport

Around 24 kg gold estimated to be worth Rs. 7.22 crore was recovered from the toilet of an aeroplane at the NSC Bose International Airport in Kolkata.

Assistant Commissioner of Customs R.S. Meena said on Monday night that the cleaning staff found two unclaimed bags in the toilet of the aircraft which had come from Bangkok and informed the police and bomb squad about the bags.

After opening the two bags, the police found 24 pieces of gold each weighing about 1 kg, Ms. Meena said, adding the gold was estimated to be around Rs. 7.22 crore.

The Assistant Commissioner Customs said in the last one month, customs authorities have five times seized gold brought illegally into the country.
