From a humble background of a farmer’s family to becoming a junior engineer in the Haryana government to proclaiming himself as a saint and an incarnate of poet Kabir, 64-year-old Rampal has seen success like few others.

Rampal was born in Thanana village of Sonepat in Haryana on September 8, 1951. After completing a diploma in engineering, he joined the Irrigation and Public Health Department, as a junior engineer and worked for 18 years.

During this period, he became a disciple of a seer, Ramdevanand.

In 1999, Rampal proclaimed himself to be an incarnation of Kabir and set up his ashram at Karontha village in Rohtak.

Trouble began for Rampal in 2006 when he allegedly made some derogatory remarks against the founder of Arya Samaj, Dayanand Saraswati.

This led to a clash between his supporters and those of Arya Samaj. One person was killed in the attack and Rampal and 24 others were arrested.

After getting bail in the case, Rampal stopped responding to court summons. He has skipped over 40 hearings thus far.
