Five persons, including two minors, were killed and six others injured when their houses in an abandoned coalmine caved in at Jamuria in West Bengal's Bardhaman district in the early hours of Tuesday.
The abandoned mine belonged to the Eastern Coalfields Limited and was shut down years ago. “Notices were served long back by the ECL to the residents to vacate the area. Compensation packages were also announced, but a few families chose to stay back in Chhatimdanga and Bauripara villages where land subsided,” District Superintendent of Police Humayun Kabir said.
