The government on Wednesday tabled a Bill in the Lok Sabha that would enable the Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) avoid litigation over eviction of unauthorised occupants from its premises.
The Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Amendment Bill 2011 was introduced by Union Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath.
The original law of 1971 was enacted to provide speedy machinery for eviction of unauthorised occupants from public premises, including those of government companies and corporations.
The DMRC had proposed amendments to the law to declare Metro properties as public premises and conferring of powers to an Estate Officer or its own officers to deal with the problem of eviction in a more expeditious manner, the Statement of Objects and Reasons of the Bill said.
However, public premises in Delhi mean any premises belonging to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi or any notified area committee. Hence, the amendment has been brought forward to expand its ambit in order to avoid recurrence of litigation over such eviction, it said.
