Violence broke out in the northern fringes of the city on Monday when a police vehicle was set on fire by a crowd following the death of a woman.

Complaint of uneasiness

Mousami Nandi, a young housewife, died on the way to a doctor after complaining of uneasiness. As news spread of her death, angry residents of the Dum Dum area in North 24 Parganas district turned violent, alleging that she used to be tortured by her husband and parents-in-law.

When the family was trying to take the body for the cremation, people rushed to the spot alleging that her husband and his parents would routinely tortured her and that they suspected that some foul-play in her death, police officials said.

Following the protests, neighbours pelted stones at a police vehicle that reached the spot and set it ablaze.

Mousami's husband and parents-in-law have been detained by the police.
