The GST Council has decided to extend the deadline for filing GSTR-3B returns for July for taxpayers in Kerala to October 5, and for August to October 10, the Centre announced on Tuesday. It has also decided to exempt relief items from abroad to the State from GST and Customs duty.

“We have decided to help people wanting to donate to Kerala, and there are many such people abroad, and so it has been decided that any material coming as relief items from abroad to Kerala will be exempt from Customs duty and GST,” Finance Minister Piyush Goyal told reporters on Tuesday.

The deadline for the GSRT-1 form for July for taxpayers in Kerala with an annual turnover above ₹1.5 crore has been extended to October 5, and for August to October 10. The deadline for the GSRT-1 form for the July-September quarter for taxpayers in Kerala with an annual turnover up to ₹1.5 crore has been extended to November 15.

Meanwhile, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to increase the Centre’s financial assistance and allowing the State to raise resources on its own by relaxing some provisions under GST. “You have sanctioned ₹500 crore of Central assistance, but this is grossly inadequate in the light of the extensive damage that has been caused. I would request you to increase this amount to ₹2,000 crore and urge you to respond positively given the urgency that is warranted,” Mr. Yechury said in his letter to the Prime Minister.
