To ensure time-bound delivery of services, the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has come out with a ‘maintenance charter’ specifying time frames for attending to different types of complaints.
Introduced for the first time, this Charter has been approved by Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu with an aim to streamline functioning of the public sector construction department.
CPWD undertakes maintenance services in 1,76,000 houses under general pool residential accommodation in 53 cities across the country, in addition to being responsible for maintaining office area of 22,60,000 sq mt.
Under the charter, CPWD is required to inform the public the time frames for attending to different complaints. Emergency complaints like blocked drains, restoration of power and water supply, faulty switches will have to be attended to in six hours, minor complaints like cleaning of drains, water overflow, plumbing and sanitary installation can be done in up to three days while upgradation (major works for enhancing safety and security) can be done in 60 to 75 days depending on the size of the dwellings.
