Congress nominated Devti Karma as it's candidate for the bypoll in Dantewada assembly constituency in Chhattisgarh.

The bypoll was necessitated because of death of BJP legislator Bhima Mandavi who was killed in a maoist attack this April during campaigning for Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP is likely announce his widow Ojashvi Mandavi for the election.

The bypoll is expected to be a high stakes and emotional battle since both the candidates were widowed in Maoist attacks. Ms Karma's husband Mahendra Karma died in an attack in 2013. The entire front line of Congress leadership was killed in this attack.

Mandavi had defeated Ms Karma in November 2018 polls by a slender margin of over 2700 votes. He was the only BJP candidate to win a seat in Bastar region that has 11 assembly seats. Mahendra Karma was one of the founder of controversial Sales Judum. He remained undisputed leader of Dantewada during his lifetime.

The Congress has been battling dissent on the seat, with Karma's son Chhavindra is also one of the claimants. He had thrown his name in the ring during the assembly polls in 2018 too. Insiders claim that unless he is assuaged Congress may not hold a chance here.
