Centre to probe SAI athlete suicide

May 15, 2015 12:11 am | Updated November 17, 2021 02:05 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Centre will order an independent inquiry into the suicide of an inmate at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre at Alappuzha in Kerala, Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu assured the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday after senior Congress leader A. K. Antony raised the issue for the second time.

‘Not an isolated one’

Mr. Antony said the incident could not be seen as an isolated one and could be indicative of a larger malaise that afflicts the sports body. He said an independent inquiry into the circumstances that led the girls to attempt suicide – one of them later died – was essential. Mr. Naidu also said the House would have a short-duration discussion on issues related to SAI in the next session of Parliament.
