With ethnic violence escalating in Assam’s Kokrajhar district and spreading to nearby areas, the Union government on Monday rushed 1,400 additional paramilitary personnel to the State.
Nine thousand personnel are deployed in the region and Home Minister P. Chidambaram is in touch with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and monitoring the situation.
Mr. Chidambaram called up Mr. Gogoi and sought an update of the situation, while Home Secretary R.K. Singh is in regular touch with State officials.
With fear of violence spreading to other Bodoland Territorial Administered Districts (BTAD) — Baksa and Udalguri — the Centre is taking no chances and has assured all help to Assam to tackle the crisis.
