A 15-year-old boy was washed away in a big stormwater drain at Veerannapalya, behind Manyata Tech Park in Bengaluru, on Wednesday afternoon.
The victim, who has now been identified as a ninth standard student, Prakash, went to swim in the natural valley along with his elder brother, Surya (18), and their neighbour Charles (19). All are residents of P&T Colony, near Ambedkar College, D.J. Halli.
The Sampigehalli police said the incident occurred around 3.30 p.m. Surya told the police that Prakash was washed away even while he tried to pull him out of the water.
When his efforts failed, he alerted the locals, who informed the police and the Fire and Emergency Services personnel.
Rescue operation suspended Though the rescue operations were on at around 4.30 p.m., the Fire Services personnel were forced to suspend them at 7 p.m.
The rescue operations will resume at 6 a.m. on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Mayor B.N. Manjunath Reddy urged citizens to exercise caution, especially during heavy rain, when drains will be flowing with rainwater.
He also said the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) would seek funds from the government to fence the open drains so that such accidents do not recur.
