Axe falls on over 4,000 NGOs

In the latest round of action against non-governmental organisations, the Union Home Ministry has cancelled the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) registration of over 4,000 NGOs since May.

Among those barred from receiving foreign donations are the Supreme Court Bar Association, the Indian Law Institute and Jawaharlal Nehru University.

The list of NGOs includes Gujarat National Law University, Panjab University, Gargi College and Lady Irwin College of Delhi University and the University of Delhi.

Kabir, an NGO floated by Manish Sisodia, the Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, has also been barred from receiving foreign funding under the FCRA. Several hospitals, including the prominent Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre, have also been removed from the list of organisations registered under the Act.

On Tuesday, the MHA cancelled licences of 971 NGOs from Odisha and West Bengal.
