Army Chief makes aerial survey of violence-hit areas

Chief of the Army Staff General Dalbir Singh Suhag arrives in Guwahati on Saturday to review the situation in Assam following the massacre of innocent people by National Democratic Front of Bodoland militants.

The Army Chief General Dalbir Singh on Saturday visited Assam to take stock of the security situation and undertook an aerial survey of the violence-hit areas of the State along with the Army officers leading the operations against the militant National Democratic Front of Boroland (Songbijit).

A Defence release stated the Army chief personally interacted with various commanders in the field to obtain a first-hand perspective of the area-domination operations on ground. The Army intensified operations after serial attacks by the NDFB (Songbijit) on Adivasi villages December 23 and retaliatory attacks by miscreants among the Bodo villages claimed 75 lives. Three persons died in police firing and the violence displaced over one lakh Bodos and Adivasis to relief camps.

“The Army Chief while expressing satisfaction with the steps taken by the commanders at all levels, asked for greater synergy with the Central and State intelligence and security agencies. Taking note of the road map being planned by the Army jointly with the police forces, the General directed his troops to extend all possible support to the State administration in bringing back normality,” stated the release.

Promising additional support for the renewed focus of operations, he hoped that it would rapidly ameliorate the security environment to bring about lasting peace and harmony in the State. The Army Chief stated that he would continue to maintain a close watch on the dynamics in the region.
