Nine days after a professor of the city's Jadavpur University was arrested for circulating an e-mail containing graphics of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, an associate professor of the Midnapore Medical College in the State's Paschim Medinipur district has filed a complaint with the police against a person for posting cartoons of Ms. Banerjee on a social networking site.
Bikram Saha filed the complaint at the Kotwali police station in the district on Saturday. “I saw a cartoon on a social networking site presenting the Chief Minister in a bad light. There were 55 comments on the caricature… most of them were derogatory,” Dr. Saha told The Hindu over telephone from the district on Sunday.
He also handed over print-outs of the caricature to the police.
Although the case has been registered, no arrest has been made so far, the police said.
On April 12, professor Ambikesh Mahapatra of Jadavpur University was arrested and had to spend a night in police custody for circulating an e-mail containing graphics of Ms. Banerjee and other Trinamool Congress leaders. The arrest evoked severe criticism from various quarters.
