YSR Congress swept the parliament and Assembly polls in Kurnool district by winning two parliament and 11 Assembly seats out of 14. The TDP, which is going to form the government, had to be content with three seats.
Interestingly, none of the Congress ministers and MLAs who migrated to the TDP after the bifurcation, won the election. Among the prominent TDP leaders who lost the election were former ministers T.G. Venkatesh, Erasu Pratap Reddy, Shilpa Mohan Reddy and MLA Labbi Venkata Swamy.
The Congress fared poorly in both elections while former Union Minister of State for Railways Kotla Jayasurya Prakasa Reddy and other Congress MLAs lost the election and many of them forfeited the deposits. Mr. Suryaprakasa Reddy, who was banking on cross-voting, was disappointed by the result in his native Kodumur constituency.
The YSRC won Aluru, Adoni, Mantralayam, Kodumur, Kurnool, Nandikotkur, Srisailam, Nandyal, Allagadda, Panyam and Dhone Assembly seats besides Kurnool and Nandyal parliament seats.
Sitting MP S.P.Y. Reddy, who shifted to YSR Congress from the Congress just before the election, won the seat with over one lakh majority.
Butta Renuka, who was a novice in politics, won the seat with 43,978 votes besides helping the Assembly candidates win the election with a thumping majority.
The YSRC won Kodumur seat with 52,384 votes and S.V. Mohan Reddy established a victory over his rival T.G. Venkatesh in Kurnool. Two brothers Y. Saiprasad Reddy and Y. Balanagi Reddy, who joined the YSRC, won the Adoni and Mantralyam seats.
Three TDP candidates who withstood the strong wave were K.E. Krishna Murthy from Pathikonda, B. Jayanageswara Reddy from Yemmiganur and B.C. Janardhan Reddy from Banaganapalli.
The high stature and experience in politics helped Mr. Krishna Murthy win the election from Pathikonda while the sympathy of the public towards Mr. Jayanageswara Reddy, son of former Minister B.V. Mohan Reddy, worked in his favour. Other local factors helped Mr. Janardhan Reddy gain victory from Banaganapalli.
Two TDP candidates Shilpa Mohan Reddy from Nandyal and Veerabhadra Goud from Aluru lost with a slender margin of 2,973 and 1,986 votes respectively.
YSRC candidate Mani Gandhi from Kodumur secured the highest margin of 52,384 votes, Aijaiah in Nandikotkur a margin of 21,862 votes and Banaganapalli a margin of 17,161 votes.
