Till recently, Anuhiya and Priya, Class X students in Jubliee English Medium School, Gnanapuram, were aware of the basic facts of a satellite. But on Friday they were enlightened persons and were explaining the children from other schools about different types of satellites and how they are launched into space with the help of different vehicles such as GSLV Mark III and PSLV, built by ISRO.

Thanks, to the World Space Week, which is being celebrated at the Jubilee English Medium School, by ISRO. The World Space Week was inaugurated at the school by the Director of Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy Prof. V.S.R.K. Prasad, in the presence of B.V.V.S.N. Prasad Rao, Chairman Organising Committee, SHAR, ISRO, Dr. Mallavarapu Prakash, Archbishop, and others. Every year, the week is celebrated by all space agencies around the world, and this year ISRO is observing the week in 13 centres in five States by setting up an exhibition, said Mr. Prasad Rao. In Andhra Pradesh, ISRO is observing the week in seven centres including at the Jubilee English Medium High School in the city.

To create awareness on space science and technology and ISRO, 27 scientists from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, will be present during the four-day exhibition at the school to interact with the young minds, said Rambabu, a young scientist.

30 slides

ISRO has set up over 30 slides depicting the history of space and astronomy from the time of Yajnavalkya and Aryabhatta to beginning of Indian Space Odyssey under Vikram Sarabhai and the establishment of ISRO.

To give an understanding to different space vehicles, prototypes of SLV, ASLV, PSLV, GSLV to the latest GSLV Mark III have been showcased.

This section, appeared to have caught the imagination of the students who were seen clicking pictures and asking about the functioning of the prototypes of Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan.

According to Mr. Prasad Rao, a separate section has been created to screen films on ISRO and space. “In this section we will give a clear picture of how different sections of a launch vehicle are de-linked, during its space journey. Those are live images clicked by the on-board cameras and never shown to public,” he said.

Competitions

ISRO will also conduct a number of competitions such as quiz, painting and display of innovative ideas.

The exhibition and the competitions are open to all from school to PG students, under various categories.
