Women ransack wine shop

October 20, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:50 am IST - KAKINADA:

Registering their protest against the setting up of a wine shop in a residential area, a group of women from Samalkot ransacked the liquor shop set up by the Excise Department at Brownpeta on Monday.

The Excise Department set up the wine shop at Brownpeta on October 16, against the wish of the residents. Since then, the local women had been staging agitations in front of the shop every day. On Monday morning, the women came in large numbers and intruded into the shop.

Raising slogans demanding the closure of the outlet, they resorted to ransack the shop.

The police entered the scene and took the agitating women into custody.

“In all, 23 beer bottles were smashed in the melee. Though we have to open the shop in July, we are forced to postpone it due to stiff resistance from people. We have asked our higher-ups to lodge a complaint with the police,” said M. Satyanarayana, Deputy Commissioner of Excise department.
