A 30-year-old woman allegedly tried to sell her month-old infant son near the Government Hospital on Sunday midnight.

On receipt of information, officials of the Women Development and Child Welfare Department rescued the baby and shifted it to the government-run Sishu Gruha.

According to sources, the woman identified as Pasupuleti Ramana, was in an inebriated state and had put the infant for sale for Rs. 1 lakh. Passersby who noticed this alerted the police.

The police later found out that the Ramana was married to one and Krishna and was a native of Tholikodu village near Nuzvid.

On spotting the WD & CW officials, the woman created a ruckus at the bus station and the government hospital and reportedly asked the officials also to buy the infant. She was shifted to a local hospital and her condition is stated to be stable.

Local people said the woman had seven children and had sold three of them.

However, WD&CW officials were trying to ascertain this, said Krishna District Project Director K. Krishna Kumari.
