VMC is planning to identify the most vulnerable locations on hill slopes and relocate the residents from here to multi-storeyed buildings.

Fear of boulders rolling down on their houses grip the residents of many hill slope areas in the city every monsoon and the government’s efforts to build retaining walls have mostly failed. Also, no solid efforts to relocate residents were made in the past.

In what is being seen as a solution to the problem, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation(VMC) is planning to identify the most vulnerable locations on hill slopes and relocate the residents from here to multi-storeyed buildings.

Though such proposals were made in past, the residents stayed put in their old places as the new homes were built far away from the city.

This time, the civic body is planning to ensure that the multi-storeyed buildings that would house the relocated families are close to their places, a VMC official said.

“The housing complex would be built at the foot of the hills or in any land available nearby. Soon, a team of officials will identify most vulnerable spots on hill slopes and later, the project would be implemented in one location as a pilot,” the official said. However, the project is still in the initial stage, the official added.
