Are you bothered by a steep spike in your electricity consumption power bills? Do you wish to want to keep a track of power consumption and be pinged whenever the consumption hits the roof?
Students of Vignan University have developed a smart power meter through which the consumers are informed through an SMS whenever the power use exceeds the normal limits.
The innovation has been designed by students of EEE Department, B. Naveen Kumar, T. Bhargav, G. Hemanth Rao, S. Praveen and D. Manikanta Swamy led by their Head of Department, G. Durga Sukumar.
“A microcontroller unit has been embedded in the system that can continuously monitor and record the energy meter readings in its permanent (non-volatile) memory location. This system also makes use of a GSM modem for remote monitoring and control of energy meter,” said Hemantha Rao.
The smart meter has also been designed to be used by the Electricity Department with features including, live meter reading, regulated power supply, electromagnetic relay driver for power supply control and digital energy meter.
The project has already won laurels and secured a host of prizes, including first prize in ‘ENCORSO’ JNTU Kakinada, Anushodana.
