Two women members from the Pedabayalu and Korukonda dalams and four militia members surrendered before Superintendent of Police of Visakhapatnam district Rahul Dev Sharma, here on Monday.

The surrendered dalam members include Thambelu Lakshmi (20) of Lengeriputt village of G-Madugula mandal and Pangi Sheilu (20) of Gunalova village under Killakota panchayat.

The Militia members include Mondepalli Rama Krishna (30) of Buradhamamidi village, Gemmeli Kondababu (26) of Veeravaram village and Pujari Simhachalam (40) of Burugubayalu village, all under Chintapalli mandal, and Gunta Ananda Rao (28) of Darakonda village under GK Veedhi mandal.

According to Mr. Rahul, both the women members Lakshmi and Sheilu, were lured into the movement by senior Maoists from their villages.

While Lakshmi was given training in planting landmines and blasting procedures, Sheilu was trained to fire a Lee Enfield .303 rifle and was also assigned a rifle.

Lakshmi participated in three murders, two famine raids one arson and one ambush. She was part of the Maoist party that murdered Batchali Balakrishna of Killamkota, after branding him as a police informer in 2014.

Sheilu participated in one murder, two famine raids, one kangaroo court and one ambush.

Among the militia members, Ramakrisha and Simhachalam were active members of armed squads and participated in famine raids and arson. Simhachalam was involved in the murders of Gemmili Sanjeeva Rao, a priest, in Balapam and Gompa Lova Srinu, a businessman.

According to Mr. Rahul, both the women Maoists Lakshmi and Sheilu have confessed that the main reason for their surrender was the persistent insult and torture by one Meena, who is said to be the wife of Gajarla Ravi or Uday, who is currently in-charge of the Andhra Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC).

Both the women are from Kondhu tribe, a particularly vulnerable tribal group, and they are not accustomed to insults like pressing the leg or giving a massage to another man or woman.

‘Health issues’

“Meena who is not only the wife of Uday, but also a DCM cadre senior Maoist member. And as per the surrendered Maoists, they were made to do menial jobs by Meena. This and other factors such as health issues and fear of being killed in exchange of fire with the security forces, impelled them to surrender,” said the SP.

The militia members surrendered mainly to get back into mainstream life and vexed with the Maoist ideology, he added.
