Special Chief Secretary Manmohan Singh on Saturday underlined the need to bring awareness among people with regard to indigenous cow breeds in the country.

Briefing the media after presiding over a high-level review meeting with the TTD authorities, he said cows occupied an important place in the Hindu philosophy and the TTD intended to develop a state-of-the-art dairy farm at Palamaner town in Chittoor district.

The previous board had sanctioned ₹40 crore for taking up various developmental works at the farm which is coming up in 450 acres. Several agencies have already come up with designs for various works. Tenders for the works will be invited after obtaining approval of the TTD board.

Native breed protection

At present, there were about 39 indigenous cow breeds in the country. In order to emphasise the importance of each breed and educate the devotees with regard to their grandness, the management was also contemplating a cow tourism project in near future. There was a dire need to protect the native breeds, he said.

TTD Executive Officer Anil Kumar Singhal said efforts were on to develop the proposed dairy farm into a model unit and exuded the confidence that the works would be completed within a year.
