Train robbers strike again

Women passengers travelling aboard Padmavati Express targeted

May 30, 2014 11:17 pm | Updated 11:17 pm IST - ANANTAPUR:

Miscreants attempted to rob women of their ornaments on Padmavati Express on Thursday night while the train was on its way to Secunderabad from Tirupati.

Padmavati Express, which is a weekly train, left Tirupati on time, reaching Gooty railway station at around 11.30 p.m. When the train reached Patakotha Cheruvu railway station, it halted for a while to allow the passage of other trains. During this time, an unspecified number of thieves tried to snatch gold ornaments from women who had berths next to the window. Speaking to The Hindu, the Railway Police Inspector at Guntakal, Siva Shankar, said that the train was not originally scheduled to stop near Patakotha Cheruvu railway station but had to do so to allow the passage of other trains.

He said that the Padmavati Express would not have been the established choice of the thieves as the train had only made an unscheduled stop. The thieves might have been waiting for some other train to stop at the place, to attack and rob passengers, he added.

In the immediate case, the loss of a gold chain besides some imitation jewellery was reported by a passenger, Shobha, travelling in the S10 coach. The Secunderbad railway police has registered a case.

No arrests have been made in connection with the case yet.
