The Tirupati Urban Police Department, known for its tech-savvy approach in establishing a connect with the denizens, has yet again launched a new cyber initiative — this time with a specific focus on problems faced by women in the temple city. In addition to their most successful Facebook page of ‘Tirupati Police,’ the department’s ‘Tirupati She Team’ has made their debut on the social networking site.

Since its inception, i.e., on International Women’s Day-2015, the ‘She Teams’ have focused on primary issues such as eve-teasing and ragging, conducting spot counselling sessions for the offenders (in presence of their families), awareness programmes at educational institutions and much more. Now that their spectrum of crimes has widened, including harassment, child marriages, discord between couples, wrong calls etc., ‘She Teams’ have taken up a bigger responsibility.“The Facebook page of ‘Tirupati She Team', a brainchild of Urban SP Gopinath Jatti, will not only ensure a wider publicity but also create a faster grievance redressal mechanism.

Complaints can be registered by clicking on the ‘Contact Us’ link on the FB page, as well as through the Whatsapp number – 8099999977 and Dial 100. Details of the person who has lodged the complaint will be kept private (or made public, based on their discretion) and action will be focused on the issue at hand,” asserted ‘Tirupati She Team' convener P. Sumathi, pointing out to women’s reluctance in approaching a police station.

A senior police official said that complaints could also be made through phone calls and the details would be transferred to the jurisdiction of concerned officials via the call recording software at Command and Control Centre.

The caller’s identity would not be revealed.

The ‘She Team,’ over the past one year, has received 106 written complaints, conducted 392 spot counselling sessions, awareness programmes and much more.

With an expected increase in staff members, in a couple of days, ‘She Team’ will be more empowered to ensure better and smart policing.
