Tension prevailed at Puthalapattu and surrounding villages on Saturday night, when two groups of youth clashed atop the Kaligiri hillock in connection with performing rituals.

The police said a group of about 20 youth from Bandapalle village of the mandal while returning from the hill temple attacked the youth at Dalitwada at Puthalapattu. Again the youth mobilised villagers at Bandapalle and resorted to physical attacks on SC youth at Puthalapattu.

Knowing that the victims were approaching the police at Puthalapattu, the attackers resorted to a road blockade at Bandapalle village, 15 km from here, leading to a heavy traffic jam for 10 kilometres on both the sides.

DSP K. Kesappa, along with additional forces from Chittoor and Pakala, rushed to the spot and took steps to clear the traffic. A police picket was arranged at Puthalapattu to prevent any untoward incident.

The DSP said based on complaints from both the groups, investigation would be taken up.
