Hundreds of villagers on Sunday objected to resumption of Vamsadhara Phase-II works at Duggupuram in Hiramandalam, alleging that the government failed to resolve their grievances. They removed tents, threw chairs, and threatened to intensify their agitation for a better package. The also raised slogans against the government and prevented officials from entering the project site.
As tension prevailed, police personnel intervened to quell the agitators.
The villagers are objecting to payment of compensation that was fixed 10 years ago. The government proposed to pay Rs.57,000 for construction of houses for the displaced persons.
The villagers alleged that officials did not make a proper assessment of the value of properties. CPI(M) leaders M.V.S. Sarma and Krishna Murthy extended their support to the villagers.
Collector P. Lakshminarasimham and SP A.S. Khan, who are monitoring the situation, directed the revenue and police personnel to handle the situation carefully.
