Women and Child Welfare Minister Paritala Sunitha on Friday inaugurated the 'Sishu Gruha', an orphanage constructed at a cost of ₹1 crore with the support of Spanish donors and the Rural Development Trust (RDT).

Speaking to reporters, Ms. Sunita lauded efforts of the RDT in the district’s development and said the organisation had carried out various activities including construction of schools and financial help to medical students.

“Those who study medicine with the help of the RDT join the organisation for five years to offer services. RDT has come forward to establish houses for Titli victims besides offering nets to affected fishermen,” she said. As regards the 'Sishu Gruha' at the Bala Sadan in Buddappa Nagar here, Ms. Sunitha said it would house orphans and abandoned children below six years of age and have adoption facilities. “The facility has eight children. Already, nearly 131 childless couples have registered online for adoption,” she added.

‘Work with dedication’

With respect to the increase in salaries of Anganwadi workers, Ms. Sunita urged staff to work with dedication and look after the nutritional needs of women and children. She said distribution of low quality food items would attract action.

District Collector G. Veerapandian said it was a good sign that organisations like the RDT were working with the government.

RDT director of programmes Moncho Ferrer and MLC Samanthakamani took part.
