Sattupalli frontrunner for dry port in TS

October 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - KHAMMAM:

With the Central government reportedly laying renewed focus on setting up a dry port in Telangana State, the demand for establishment of the facility in Sattupalli constituency is gaining momentum.

The demand stems from the fact that the constituency is ideally suited for establishment of a dry port because of its enormous agribusiness potential and geographical proximity to Kakinada Port in the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

Sattupalli MLA S. Venkata Veeraiah and several other local body elected representatives made representations in this regard to Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Shipping Nitin Gadkari during the latter’s visit to V.M. Banjara in Penuballi mandal in April this year.

They highlighted the advantages of establishment of dry port in Sattupalli constituency because of its rich agri-business and industrial potential besides strategic location, surrounded by the horticultural hub of Aswaraopeta mandal, and its nearness to the Kakinada port in the neighbouring State.

The demand assumes immense significance in the wake of the Centre’s reported move to set up a mega food park in 100 acres at Buggapadu in Sattupalli mandal. “Sattupalli constituency is a natural choice for establishment of dry port in Telangana State,” says TDP district president T. Brahmaiah.

The government should set up the proposed dry port in Khammam district considering the factors like economic viability in terms of transportation, economic empowerment of rural masses and employment generation, he contends.

Its enormous agri-business potential and geographical proximity to Kakinada Port in AP place it in an advantageous position
