The sleepy agrarian mandal of Sabbavaram in Visakhapatnam district will be transformed into an education hub in the next two years, Pendurthi MLA Bandaru Satyanarayana Murthy has said.
Interacting with The Hindu after inspecting the ongoing works at the DSNLU, he said that two more institutions — Petroleum University and Indian Maritime University (IMU) — will be coming up in the mandal.
“In all, we will have three universities, including DSNLU, in close proximity at Sabbavaram,” he said.
The government has allotted 1,000 acres in Sabbavaram for building a ‘knowledge city’, 350 acres to Petroleum University, and 125 acres to the IMU.
According to Mr. Murthy, the Petroleum University will be set up on the lines of University of Petroleum and Energy Studies at Dehradun in Uttarakhand. It will start functioning from 2016 on the temporary campus provided by Andhra University.
The contract to build IMU was first given to National Building Construction Corporation, but the PSU backed off later. It has now been given to the CPWD. “Plans are ready and work will start soon,” he said.
